This week we discussed teaching with technology and how to make it authentic in the classroom. The lecture was interesting to watch as our lecturers used examples for the movie 'School of Rock' to show how being an authentic teaching can educate the students more than an unauthentic lesson. In the lecture, the word pedagogy was used which I had never heard before and therefore was confused about what it meant. We were provided with a definition which was the function or work of a teacher or the art or science of teaching in a classroom. I decided to look it up on Google: definitions when I got home to see whether it had any other meanings and it said the method and practice of teaching. In the lecture, it explained different way to use authentic learning in a classroom. Some examples of this were creating activities that had real world relevance such as creating a holiday to a certain destination or cleaning up after an environmental problem. I recall creating a holiday in a SOSE class about 5 years ago where I sent the person to Egypt as I thought it would be a exciting place to travel. Another example was using experts on the topic to talk to the class and discuss the topic giving the students more information. My favourite example that was given was collaboration as I feel working in teams gives the students more responsibility to do their part in the activity.
In the workshop we went around the different tables and suggested what skills a person would need for the assignment. My group suggested communication as the person writing the instructions needs to give clear and appropriate instructions about the website and how to use it. The Instructions have to be made for someone that has never used a computer before; therefore they need to be very detailed. Then we discussed what we were doing our assignment on with Jenni and she gave us feedback and ideas about what we could do. Jenni talked about the assignment due dates and how we will do peer reviews on another person’s work. Having someone peer review it makes me a little bit nervous but they will be able to give me constructive feedback that will make my instructions more detailed. This will also allow me to fix up any problems that they have found so that when it is marked by a teacher it will be fixed.
At home I was able to work more freely on my assignment as I researched into what you can achieve on twitter on Google and found how to use it for its main purpose, which is socializing and spreading different topics to other users. I found this video on YouTube about what you can do on Twitter and how you use it as I before writing instructions I needed to learn how to use it first.
I learnt and wrote instructions about how to upload a profile picture, add friends, family or celebrities, how to tag people or a subject into your tweets and how to create an event on twitter. I am feeling pretty proud of what I have achieved so far and look forward to the feedback I receive from my peer review so that I can make it better. I will be spending my study week studying writing my instructions in more detail about how to use it and setting up the assignment page on my Yola account. As my sister is in the class I was able to show her my current instructions and she read through them and checked that my instructions were clear and what I could change. I am looking forward to handing this assignment in as I have learnt so much from it and I am excited about the final product.
